Su richiesta del prof. Agostino Portera, segnaliamo il Webinar “Education and Intercultural Identity”.
The presentation summarizes the results of a qualitative study that aimed to identify the positive outcomes and opportunities, as well as the risks related to identity building in migration and living in a multicultural context. The research embraces a 7-year longitudinal case study, during which the life stories, conflicts, crises, and problem-solving strategies of 23 young people of Italian origin with migration experiences – some still living in Germany and some who had returned to Italy – were observed.
The sample was composed of both adolescents with intellectual disabilities or other psychological or social disorders and adolescents who seemed to have benefited from living and growing up in different cultures. From the biographies, it was possible to identify the main risk and protective factors related to migration and life in a multicultural context, as well as the adequate coping strategies associated with their conflicts. The research’s results, which highlight elements related to the inclusion of the second generation of immigrants in the host country, suggest that intercultural education can play a central role in determining whether subjects experience enrichment and growth or increasing difficulties or even mental illnesses and social disorders. Acquiring intercultural competence could foster stable, flexible, and intercultural identities.
