Summer school “Live-able Cities” – 21-26 luglio, Alicante (Spagna)

The summer course will be a one-week intense immersion in theory and practice of participatory approaches in community health education and promotion in vulnerable neighbourhoods. Community sense of coherence is a central determinant of a live-able city and citizens’ health and quality of life.
It requires ongoing dialogue with the community and their active involvement. Hence, in this summer school participants will:

  • Discuss the values and ethics of community participation and get familiar with a broad range of participatory methodologies and tools of asset-based community development
  • Learn about, explore, and experience different communities of Alicante in local workshops with the local population
  • Reflect on these experiences and draft ideas about which methodologies and approaches might support further community development
  • Discuss ideas with local actors and
  • Present a short working plan based on their experiences and discussions in the field This year, the ETC team will collaborate with the Asertos programme, which works in Urban Deprived Areas and Neighbourhoods (UDANs) to promote community-based urban regeneration.

Participants will work in international groups with experienced tutors. This international learning environment is a unique opportunity to not only learn from good experiences but also through an immersion in the field and systematic reflection. It can be a life changing experience. It will offer an interdisciplinary training programme for Master’s students, PhD students and early-career academics, to enhance knowledge on themes related to these topics through lectures and group-work sessions led by scholars of national and international standing. It also aims to create a salutogenic environment conducive to well-being, critical thinking and methodological discussion and to support exchange opportunities as well as the creation of new networks.
Academic Credits & Distance Learning: participation in the ETC Summer School can be validated for 4 ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System). For students who are interested in achieving the 8 ECTS credits, a post-course accompaniment will be carried out through Distance Learning, which will aim to develop scientific communications for the Concha Colomer Symposium 2025.
Application deadline: 20th June 2024
The course fee is 800€.
The fee includes accommodation during the 6 nights of the course and lunch during course days.
